Concept
Before doing anything in 3D, I had to start making some sketch of my creature. Make searches to know how creatures are made and trying some drawings techniques.
Because drawing is not really my things, I'll show you only the first 3D concepts of the creature...
Final Model
After a lot of edits, I finally had something I liked!
I mainly used 3D kit-bashes to make the mecha because of short deadline. I assembled every part in a "standard" posture. Then, using "CAT rig" in 3Ds Max, I gave the mecha a virtual skeleton. That way, I could move every part and gave it the posture I liked!
Texturing
The obvious next step was to apply textures on it ! I made the UV unwrapping in Cinema 4D and the textures in Substance Painter.
The render was made using V-ray for 3Ds Max.
VFX - Ambiance
Because a grey background is flat and sad, I added some colors and effects to punch the image !
Advertising / Presentation video
Making a mecha is already an interesting job, but if it's just to make a single frame it's boring... So, like a car, this beast deserves a proper presentation.
Renders was made using V-ray for 3Ds Max, and the post-production using After Effect.
The sound is a simple music, I added it in Premier Pro. The music continue with a entier Demo reel that you can watch here : Demo Reel 2020
Integration Video
Now that I had a proper presentation, it's time to make the beast move !
The animation of the mecha was made using "CAT rig" from 3Ds Max. (Btw this is not the more stable option...)
Render with V-ray for 3Ds Max - Post-Production in After Effect - Sound Design in Vegas Pro using sounds libraries.
Turnaround
To end this big project, a simple 360° of the Mecha.
